World Sleep Day: 6 Tips for a Better Night’s Sleep

Today is World Sleep Day which is an important reminder of how important getting a good night's sleep is. Studies show that we spend up to one-third of our lives sleeping but only 21% of Americans are actually getting the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep each night. If you’re one of the 82% of Americans not getting enough rest, follow these 6 simple tips to get a better night’s sleep.

Implement a Bedtime Routine

When thinking of a bedtime routine, your kids might be the first thing that comes to mind, but bedtime routines are crucial for adults as well. Schedule seven to eight hours of sleep each night to ensure you're getting enough rest. It can be tempting to skimp on a couple of hours of sleep to stay up late binge-watching your favorite Netflix series (Did someone say The Haunting of Hill House?) but one late night usually turns into two and before you know it, you're waking up groggy every morning.

Pay Attention to Your Diet

What we put into our bodies has a huge impact on our sleep quality. Avoid eating large meals before bedtime as it is often uncomfortable and can disrupt sleep. Limit your caffeine and alcohol intake as both can disrupt important hormones that can affect your sleep.

Stay Active

Staying active has many health benefits and a good night’s sleep is no exception. Exercising and staying active has been proven to positively impact your quality of sleep. Research has also shown that regular exercise can even help relieve some symptoms of insomnia. Just be sure to exercise during the day as exercising too close to bedtime can make it hard to fall asleep.

Resist Nighttime Scrolling

We've all done it... but did you know scrolling through your newsfeed and catching up on late night emails in bed affects your quality of sleep? This is due to the blue light that is emitted by your phone.  If you must scroll, be sure to turn on your blue light filter in your phone's settings.

Invest in a Comfortable Bed and Bedding

I can't stress enough how big of an impact having a comfortable bed and bedding has on your quality of sleep. Whether your mattress is too hard, or your sheets keep slipping off your mattress these little annoyances get in the way of resting comfortably. Not ready to splurge on a new mattress? Invest in a great sheet set. Our Vilano Springs Extra-Deep Pocket Sheet Set is extra soft and comfy has thousands of 5-star reviews, and a 1-year warranty.
